San Jose police authorities suspect the man fatally shot by officers killed his own child and contacted emergency services, allegedly setting up a deadly encounter with law enforcement. This occurred on Sunday.
Mateusz Dzierbun, a 48-year-old resident of Fremont, was identified by authorities.
Around 3:30 p.m., police were dispatched to Cataldi Park after receiving a report concerning an assault with a sharp object. Upon their arrival, officers found a man positioned over a 9-year-old individual, the child, who was observed bleeding. The man was holding a large kitchen knife.
Police officials stated they attempted to manage the situation verbally, seeking to calm the suspect, Mateusz Dzierbun. However, the suspect displayed no willingness to comply with the officers’ instructions.
According to police, during a conversation, the suspect suddenly rose, brandished the knife, and charged towards the officers. Following this threat, two officers fired their weapons, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Information regarding the officers involved was provided; one had approximately four and a half years of service, while the other possessed over nineteen years of experience. Following the shooting, the officers attended to the child, but unfortunately, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mateusz Dzierbun was transported to a hospital after the shooting. Despite receiving medical treatment, he later succumbed to his injuries and died. Police confirmed that Dzierbun was the father of the child. Furthermore, during the initial 911 call, Dzierbun reportedly claimed that an unidentified individual had attacked his child.
