Fatal Lincoln car crash death of Jay Petersen
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of the man killed Monday evening following a police attempt to stop a vehicle for speeding.
Around 8:45 p.m., an officer initiated a pursuit to intercept a vehicle exceeding the speed limit in the vicinity of Southwest 98th and West O avenues.
Deputy Chief Ben Houchin reported that the driver, identified as Jay Petersen, a 39-year-old resident of Lincoln, failed to comply with the officer’s request to pull over and instead continued southbound on 98th Street.
Subsequently, the vehicle collided with an entrance to a field, causing it to flip violently.
Petersen was thrown from the car. According to Houchin, medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene.
The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full investigation into the incident. The deputy involved in the traffic stop has been temporarily suspended from duty.
