Dispatchers sent deputies to 470th Street in the rural town of Mystic after receiving reports of a disturbance involving firearms late on Tuesday night. Upon their arrival, law enforcement personnel discovered two individuals injured at the specified address. The identified injured persons were Randy Walker and his brother, Destry Walker.
Further assessment revealed that Destry Walker, the thirty-six year old, was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical services. Concurrently, Randy Walker, who sustained injuries from the event, was transported via helicopter emergency services to a medical facility in the Des Moines area for urgent treatment.
While responding to the initial shooting location, the deputies were subsequently informed about a separate vehicle incident nearby. During their investigation of the motorcycle crash site, law enforcement located Robert Barrell, who was fifty-one years old, concealed in nearby vegetation. Based on findings at both the shooting and the subsequent motorcycle crash locations, Barrell was identified as the person responsible for the initial shooting incident.
Following his discovery, Barrell was taken into custody and processed at the Appanoose County Jail. The charges currently pending against him include one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office has announced that their investigation into this tragic event is ongoing.
