The Orange County Coroner identified the three fatalities involved in a severe collision that started as a police chase early Wednesday. According to authorities, 22-year-old Brandon Antonio Ayala Herrera from Huntington Park, 20-year-old Caleb Ezequiel Mendoza from Maywood, and 27-year-old Luis Alejandro Mendez-Carbajal from Panorama City were the three young adults who died in the serious high-speed crash on the 5 Freeway near Anaheim.

Two other individuals inside the vehicle survived but suffered severe injuries. Officials stated that they were being followed by Anaheim Police officers because they were suspected of unlawfully entering a car.

Initial information shows the deadly crash happened on the northbound section of the 5 Freeway close to Brookhurst Street in Anaheim at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, as reported by Sky5. Police located the suspect vehicle, which had sped away.

The car crashed again around 3:25 a.m. near Brookhurst Street in Anaheim, flipping and landing on its roof on the embankment alongside the highway. The crash resulted in significant traffic disruption and delays on both sides of the freeway for several hours.

The two surviving suspects are reported to be in stable and critical condition.

The incident is currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
