Fatal Tama County shooting death of Logan Kurth
Tama County Attorney Brent Heeren and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation have officially confirmed that nineteen-year-old Logan Kurth was the individual shot and killed by law enforcement during the early morning hours of July 5th.
Law enforcement officials issued an updated statement Tuesday, revealing that Mr. Kurth succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries he received after he approached police officers while brandishing a weapon. The officer involved in the incident has been questioned and is currently on administrative leave, awaiting a full investigation by Iowa’s Attorney General and Tama County Attorney’s offices.
The victim was a recent high school graduate, earning his diploma from South Tama County High School in 2024. He is the son of Megan Thiessen, a current member of the school board for that district. In response to the tragedy, a memorial was established on the district’s official social media platform on July 9th.
The memorial message conveyed support and condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with school board member Megan Thiessen and her family this week. The entire South Tama County educational community, including teachers, staff, and administration, mourns the loss of Logan. We hope this message brings a sense of community warmth and support to you all during this difficult time.”
