Fatal Soulsville shooting death of Joseph Simpson

Memphis authorities have confirmed the identity of a man killed during a shooting in Soulsville over the weekend. Police announced Tuesday that Joseph Simpson, an 18-year-old, was the victim of a fatal shooting.

Officials arrived at the scene located at College Street and Ferry Court towards the evening of Friday. The injured male was transported to a hospital in critical condition. According to the Memphis Police Department, the young man passed away at the hospital on Sunday morning.

Family members are struggling with the loss. Theodore Simpson, the father of the deceased, shared his grief. “Frankly, we are not holding up well,” Simpson expressed.

Simpson recounted, “I received a call informing me my son had been shot, and he was lying on the ground. My first reaction was to urge them to contact the police and the ambulance immediately. They insisted they had already called us first.”

Joseph was an ambitious young man. Simpson noted his son graduated from Trezavant High School and was in the process of transforming his future.

“He truly changed his life,” Simpson shared, describing Joseph’s positive trajectory. “He was involved in different activities, including with the church, and was even pictured with Governor Bill Haslam.”

The family recently celebrated Joseph’s birthday just two days prior to the incident.

“His humor often brought us laughter, but now we find ourselves crying,” Simpson said. “He will be deeply missed.”

The family has established a fundraising page to support burial costs.

No information regarding suspects has been released by police. Citizens are encouraged to contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH if they have any leads.
