The ongoing operation to find three missing individuals in Tennessee ended tragically at Meeman-Shelby State Park. According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, three men went missing on Tuesday while engaging in recreational activities on the Mississippi River.
Spanish language coverage reported the discovery of three Hispanic men deceased after swimming and fishing in the Mississippi River. Rescue personnel located the three bodies early Wednesday morning near a boat access point. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office officially identified the victims as Marlon Mendez, aged 28; Rudy Perez, aged 31; and Jose Yanes, aged 52.
Multiple agencies collaborated on the search and recovery mission, including the Shelby County Search and Rescue team and the United States Coast Guard. Sheriff’s department spokesperson John Morris detailed that two bodies were recovered around 11 a.m., with the third discovery occurring at 12:45 p.m.
The families of the three missing men experienced significant distress during the search. A large number of family members and friends gathered near the Mississippi River as authorities conducted their search efforts.
Yanes’ relatives confirmed he was fishing with companions on the riverbank. They shared that he has six children, with the youngest being 12 years old.
A local business owner, Doug Ammons, voiced strong concerns about water safety. He emphasized the frequent occurrence of drownings in the area, urging people to avoid the river. Ammons described the river as “incredibly dangerous,” suggesting that individuals without proper safety equipment should not attempt navigation.
The medical examiner continues to investigate the precise cause of death for the three victims.
