Fatal Pender County car crash death of William Shannon Coston

William Shannon Coston, a resident of Hampstead, was involved in a single automobile mishap occurring very early on the morning of Monday, July 21. This occurred on N.C. 210 East and proved fatal. The incident was preceded by a police chase stemming from an attempt to pull over a driver suspected of being under the influence.

Around the stroke of 2 a.m. on that date, a patrol officer from the Surf City Police Department identified an automobile moving in a disorderly manner on N.C. 50. This officer then attempted to stop the vehicle. The operator of the car did not halt initially, but the officer persisted in following the automobile until it reached U.S. 17. Additional law enforcement from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office was then summoned to aid in the situation.

Law enforcement reports indicate that the vehicle involved abruptly increased its speed upon seeing officers. This prompted the initial pursuing officers to cease the operation following their department’s procedures.

Shortly after, at 2:04 a.m., a deputy officer from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit along N.C. 210 East. The crash took place a mere minute later, close to the Valhalla Way intersection.

Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene and confirmed the death of William Shannon Coston. Law enforcement has indicated that there is no threat to the general public at this time, and they continue to investigate the incident.
