Authorities from Rockingham County, Virginia, reported a tragic incident at the Hatcher family residence late on Sunday, August 3. A man wielding a large knife forced his way into the home and attacked Holly Hatcher.

The confrontation escalated, and the attacker turned his attention to Holly’s husband, Michael Hatcher. The assault spilled outside the property. According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), Michael Hatcher managed to grab a handgun from his car and fired a shot that resulted in the attacker’s death.

Upon their arrival, deputies found Michael Hatcher suffering from wounds sustained during the attack. Tragically, Holly Hatcher was pronounced dead at the scene. She would have celebrated her 63rd birthday on Tuesday, August 12. Holly was employed by the Rockingham County Public School system for 19 years as an elementary school teacher.

In response to the events of August 3, Spencer Hatcher, accompanied by his father Michael, appeared in a joint video statement with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office. The clip, which lasted approximately 14 minutes, detailed the occurrence while also expressing gratitude for the community’s support.

“We’ve cried, we’ve hurt, we’ve hugged, and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us and between you,” Michael Hatcher conveyed in the statement.
