Fatal St. Landry Parish car crash death of Chrystal Thevis
Louisiana State Police Troop I is investigating a two-car collision that occurred on U.S. Highway 167 near Flamingo Road in St. Landry Parish early Friday morning, August 15, 2025. The incident resulted in the death of a pedestrian identified as Chrystal Thevis, aged 42, who resided in Opelousas.
Preliminary findings indicate a 2011 Toyota 4Runner traveling south on Highway 167 collided with Thevis, who was reportedly crossing the road in dark attire. Subsequently, the pedestrian was hit by another southbound motorist who fled the scene and remains unidentified.
Thevis received life-threatening injuries and did not survive the impact, occurring at the location. The operator of the 4Runner was wearing a seatbelt and suffered no physical harm during the incident.
Even though initial suspicion regarding impairment was absent, authorities gathered a breath test sample from the 4Runner’s driver. The results indicated no presence of alcohol. As part of the ongoing probe, toxicological examination is being conducted on Thevis’s remains. This fatality incident is currently active in the investigation.
Investigators are actively attempting to identify the escaping motorist. They appeal to the public for any information concerning the accident or anyone observed in the vicinity between 1:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. on the morning of August 15th.
