The victim, Kathryn Kuykendall, sustained multiple injuries from the collision and is now seeking justice through legal channels. Her attorney, Marc Lenahan, has described the NFL’s decision as baffling, noting that the league is postponing the disciplinary hearing until after the 2025 football season begins.
Kuykendall, who was struck by Rice’s vehicle, is still recovering from her wounds, and Lenahan is representing her in a lawsuit that includes a demand for a $1 million settlement, which was mutually agreed upon in April but remains pending. The lawyer emphasized that the situation feels unjust, stating that it defies logic for the league to delay accountability. He added that Rice claims his groin injury has healed enough for him to play, yet he seems unwilling to take responsibility for the harm caused.
Lenahan also voiced frustration with the NFL’s apparent indifference to the victims of the hit-and-run, where Rice was speeding on a Dallas street at more than 100 miles per hour, leading to a multi-vehicle accident and a subsequent attempt to flee the scene. The attorney is particularly incensed by recent remarks from Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who made a light-hearted comment suggesting Rice should be sent abroad for leisure rather than confronted about his financial obligations.
Rashee Rice, the wide receiver for the Chiefs, pleaded guilty to two felony charges, including reckless driving that resulted in bodily harm and a hit-and-run involving serious injury. Despite the guilty plea, the NFL has suspended him from competition, though he may participate in the initial games of the season.
