Samuel Chambers dies in fatal Clay County car crash
Fatal car crash death of Samuel Chambers
The Indiana State Police Putnamville Post is examining a fatal traffic incident which took place on Clay County Road 1450 North near State Road 59. According to reports, a pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle.
Initial findings from Trooper Caleb Hughes and accident reconstruction specialist Trooper Rondell Shelton suggest that around 7:40 p.m., a 2018 Honda sedan driven by Courtney Withers, who was 36 years old and from Carbon, was heading west on County Road 1450 North. It is believed that Withers did not notice a man walking beside the road and collided with him. Following the collision, the vehicle went off the road to the south side and stopped.
The pedestrian involved in the crash has been confirmed as Samuel Chambers, who was 48 years old and also from Carbon. Mr. Chambers was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Coroner’s Office.
Further investigation by Trooper Hughes revealed that Withers appeared to be under the influence. She consented to standard field sobriety tests, which she did not pass. A certified chemical test is currently pending. Because a minor child under the age of 18 was found in Withers’ car, the Clay County Department of Child Services was notified. The child was subsequently released to a family member.
Courtney Withers was taken into custody and transported to the Clay County Jail without any issues. She is being held on charges including Causing Death While Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, which is classified as a Level 4 Felony.
