Fatal MOUNT CARBON SHOOTING death of JOHN MIDDLETON

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has provided additional details regarding the incident in the Mount Carbon area on Monday, August 18th, 2025. This event resulted in two fatalities and three individuals sustaining minor injuries from shotgun pellets.

Identified by authorities as one of the deceased is 49-year-old JOHN MIDDLETON. The other person killed, along with the suspect, is 53-year-old MICHAEL HALL, both residents of Mount Carbon.

Investigators indicate that the three people injured by shotgun pellets were considered to be bystanders who were not intentionally targeted.

The motive behind this incident remains unknown, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office confirms it is still actively investigating.

Deputies were dispatched to the Mount Carbon location around 10:30 a.m. on Monday due to reports of a gunshot victim and an active gunman.

Upon arrival, responding officers discovered the suspected shooter, later identified as MICHAEL HALL, deceased inside his residence from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. JOHN MIDDLETON was found deceased outside, located beneath a nearby carport.

The responding agencies included personnel from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, Montgomery Police Department, and officers from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR).
