The fatal PEMBROKE car crash death of Xie Hongzhuo, Zhang Xiaolan, Jian Mingli, Pinki Changrani, and Shankar Kumar Jha
Five individuals lost their lives in a serious tour bus accident near Pembroke, New York, on Friday, August 22nd. The New York State Police have officially identified the victims.
Among the deceased were a student from Columbia University in China, three residents of New Jersey, and one from India. The identified victims include Xie Hongzhuo, aged 22, from Beijing, China; Zhang Xiaolan, aged 55, from Jersey City, New Jersey; Jian Mingli, aged 56, also from Jersey City; Pinki Changrani, aged 60, from East Brunswick, New Jersey; and Shankar Kumar Jha, aged 65, from Madhu Bani, India.
The incident occurred around noon on Friday on the eastbound section of I-90, specifically near Exit 48A. According to the police, the driver of the M & Y Tour Inc. bus, which was en route from Niagara Falls to New York City, is believed to have lost focus, swerved, and then overcorrected. This caused the bus to cross the median strip and overturn into a ditch.
All fifty-four individuals on board the bus sustained injuries. Many of the victims were left trapped beneath or beside the vehicle. Emergency services evacuated the injured passengers, transporting them to various medical facilities including ECMC, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Buffalo General, Oishei Children’s Hospital, and the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Regarding the medical outcomes, ECMC was the receiving hospital for 21 injured passengers. Out of these, seven have since left the hospital, and it is reported that two more patients are expected to be discharged on Saturday. Five of the injured were placed in the intensive care unit for trauma treatment and are currently in stable condition.
Following the accident, the National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the rollover. Authorities are seeking public assistance, asking anyone with dash cam footage of the incident or any relevant information about the crash to contact the New York State Police at 585-344-6200.
