Law enforcement officials in Vermont reported a fatal incident involving law enforcement on Thursday evening. According to state troopers, the event transpired shortly before 9:30 p.m. at a residence located at 78 Valley Street in Springfield.
Multiple law enforcement agencies converged on the scene, including units from the Springfield police department and the Windsor County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies were involved in an ongoing investigation that led them to the property.
Upon their arrival, responding officers stated they were confronted by an individual in an automotive vehicle. This individual reportedly sped away from the officers, prompting two law enforcement personnel to discharge their weapons.
The individual involved, later identified by authorities as James Crary, a 36-year-old resident of Newport, New Hampshire, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. The fatal injuries were attributed to the gunfire exchanged.
No members of the responding law enforcement team sustained any injuries, ensuring the safety of the officers involved in the operation.
The specific troopers who discharged their firearms have been identified as Springfield Police Officer Vincent Franchi and Deputy Bryan Jalava of the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department. Following standard departmental procedure for such incidents, both officers have entered into a period of paid leave.
The Vermont State Police are conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this officer-involved shooting. As is standard protocol for such events in the state, the case will be formally transferred to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office. A determination regarding the justification of the force used by the officers will be made by the Attorney General’s Office.
