Fatal Elkhart County, Ind. car crash death of Steven Perez

Law enforcement officials provided additional details regarding a four-car collision that occurred at the junction of County Road 40 and County Road 17 on Friday morning, resulting in two fatalities. Initial reports indicated that a 24-year-old resident from Wakarusa was traveling eastbound on County Road 40 when he failed to comply with a traffic signal, specifically a stop sign. This driver’s action initiated a chain of events at the intersection.

The force of the impact from the first collision subsequently involved two other vehicles. One of these was being operated by a 21-year-old man identified as Steven Perez, who resided in Elkhart. The other vehicle struck was driven by a 69-year-old woman named Donna Gushwa, who was a resident of Milford and was heading northbound on County Road 17. According to investigators, Perez was not secured by a seatbelt during the collision, which contributed to his being thrown from his vehicle.

Following the initial impacts, Perez’s car experienced a rollover, and it collided with a vehicle being driven by a 59-year-old woman from Elkhart who was also proceeding northbound on County Road 17. Emergency medical services pronounced both Perez and Gushwa deceased at the scene after arriving on the scene. The 24-year-old driver involved in the first collision and the 59-year-old woman from Elkhart were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment, though their conditions were not reported as critical.
