MIAMI VALLEY — Tragedy struck Darke County on Monday when a 67-year-old man died after being pinned under his own equipment during a routine task. The incident occurred near the intersection of Coletown-Lightsville and Zumbrum Roads.
According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Roth, a resident of Union City, was operating his Toro lawnmower in a ditch adjacent to the roadway when the machine lost stability. The device slid out of control, rolled over, and became lodged beneath him at the bottom of the depression.
Investigators have not yet determined the exact duration of Roth’s entrapment before emergency responders arrived. However, the coroner’s office has confirmed that the accident was the direct cause of his death.
Both the Darke County Coroner’s investigator and the Accident Reconstruction Team were dispatched to the site to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This heartbreaking event underscores the importance of workplace safety, even during seemingly low-risk activities. Family members were notified promptly by the authorities.
