A fatal multi-vehicle collision occurred in Meade County on September 6, resulting in the death of an elderly woman. The incident took place approximately 15 miles northwest of Union Center, South Dakota, on Chaffee Place, a narrow, unpaved road.
Deputies from the South Dakota Highway Patrol confirmed that 83-year-old Sharon Frances Herron was operating a passenger vehicle eastbound on the gravel road. Simultaneously, a 19-year-old driver, identified as Emma Jean Radabaugh, was controlling a pickup truck traveling westbound on the same stretch of Chaffee Place. The vehicles met head-on as both were ascending a hill, causing the accident.
Emergency services responded to the scene and found Herron deceased immediately. An official statement from the investigating authorities indicated that the presence of seatbelts was not determined. In contrast, Radabaugh, who was secured with a seatbelt during the impact, sustained only slight injuries and was transported for medical evaluation.
