The death of Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James has been confirmed following a small aircraft incident Thursday in Franklin, North Carolina. James, who was 57, perished along with his wife, Melody Carole Wilson, and his stepdaughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson.
The trio was traveling in a Cirrus SR22T aircraft registered to James. The plane departed from Nashville and crashed in a field near Iotla Valley Elementary School. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, no one at the nearby school was injured in the accident.
James, a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, was renowned for writing hit songs for artists such as Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, and Bon Jovi. He was particularly famous for composing Underwood’s song “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
It has been reported that Meryl Wilson, who was 28, had just celebrated her birthday on social media before the tragedy occurred. A post on Wilson’s Instagram account marked the occasion.
Friends and colleagues have shared condolences, acknowledging James’ significant contributions to the music industry. The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation by the FAA.
