Police reports indicate a tragic shooting incident occurred on Friday night in the Uptown area, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old male and leaving another individual injured. This event marks the second fatality involving gunfire in the Uptown region within the recent two-week timeframe.
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of West Sunnyside Avenue around 11:50 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a young male, approximately 18 years of age, rendered unconscious due to a gunshot wound, specifically targeting his head. Emergency medical services transported him to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death.
The officers also encountered a 27-year-old female at the scene. She had sustained an injury to her right arm from a gunshot wound. She was transported to the same hospital and was reported to be in stable health.
According to police statements, investigators located four firearms at the scene. Currently, no individuals have been taken into custody regarding this incident.
This latest fatal shooting is not isolated, as police noted it occurred just under two weeks after the death of a 17-year-old male in a previous shooting incident in the Asia on Argyle section of Uptown.
In that earlier event, authorities reported that the teenager was outside the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue around 12:20 a.m. on September 15th. A group of eight men approached him at that time. One of the individuals involved produced a weapon and fired a shot, leading to the teenager’s death. Medical professionals at Illinois Masonic Hospital pronounced him deceased upon arrival.
The identity of the deceased 17-year-old has been identified by his mother as Khalif Norwood. According to ABC 7 news, Norwood’s mother stated that her son was in the neighborhood visiting friends when the fatal shooting took place.
Detectives are actively pursuing leads and conducting a thorough investigation into both the recent and previous shooting incidents. No suspects have been apprehended or are currently in custody.
