LATEST INFORMATION: Authorities report that the fatal accident occurred Tuesday morning on a key stretch of highway. OHP says the incident happened before dawn on Interstate 40 East, near the mile marker 115 area.
This location is in Canadian County, Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is currently investigating this tragic event.
The initial report indicates four vehicles were involved in this complex collision. OHP describes the sequence of events that led to the fatality. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound in the right lane when one struck the rear of the other. This impact caused the rear vehicle to leave the roadway and overturn.
Complicating the situation, this first vehicle was then struck by two additional cars. The secondary impacts caused the vehicle to separate into two distinct parts.
The person operating the vehicle that was initially hit in this chain of events has been identified. Officials state the driver was Joyce Hamblen, who was 50 years old. Hamblen hailed from Sellersburg, Indiana. She was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the incident.
One of the drivers involved in the subsequent impacts suffered injuries. However, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirms no other people were hurt beyond this one person. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the full circumstances surrounding this accident.
