An 86-year-old man, identified as Oliver Jefferson, has passed away due to his injuries following a house fire on Hartridge Drive, which occurred on Sunday evening. Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones confirmed that Mr. Jefferson died on Monday afternoon at a specialized burn center located in Augusta.
The fire department, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, was alerted and responded to the blaze. While the details surrounding the origin of the fire are still under investigation, officials have stated that this was the incident from which Mr. Jefferson sustained his severe burns. Their efforts focused on extinguishing the flames at the residence.
Further reports indicate that emergency services personnel provided critical care to Mr. Jefferson before transporting him to Augusta for specialized treatment. Despite the advanced medical attention, the burns were ultimately fatal. The incident occurred just as crews were concluding operations on a separate, large overnight fire at the Southern Cuisine restaurant located downtown.
