A Priceville police officer, Garry Chapman, has been dismissed from his position following a pursuit that tragically resulted in a death earlier this month. The Priceville Police Department confirmed that Garry Chapman is not longer employed by the agency. Chapman is the son of Duane Chapman, the famed Dog the Bounty Hunter.
A city official verified Officer Garry Chapman’s connection to Duane Chapman, the celebrity fugitive catcher. Chapman was initially placed on administrative leave after a pursuit began on September 6th that ended fatally.
Law enforcement reports indicate the incident started on Interstate 65 near mile marker 329 when an automobile, suspected of traffic infractions and possibly driving under the influence, failed to comply with police requests to pull over. This triggered a chase that transitioned from the highway onto Main Street in Hartselle. Police confirmed the incident concluded shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Main Street, near Highway 31.
Eyewitnesses described the suspect, later identified as Archie Hale, colliding with another vehicle. This impact reportedly sent the other car flying across the intersection, causing the suspect’s vehicle to crash into a ditch. Hale sustained significant injuries but survived the collision. Charges filed against him include murder and multiple other offenses.
Emergency services transported six individuals to a regional hospital following the high-speed chase involving Priceville police. One person arrived in critical condition, while Tristan Hollis, an unrelated individual, died at the scene according to authorities. Police clarified that Hollis and the other three passengers in his car were not participants in the pursuit.
