Fatal Madera County car crash death of Raymond Barrantes.
In a solemn tribute, floral displays were placed at the entrance of the Chowchilla Police Department, and official flags were lowered to half-staff on Saturday to honor the memory of Officer Raymond Barrantes, who met a tragic end. The community expressed grief for the loss of a dedicated officer.
Officials reported that Officer Barrantes was operating his vehicle eastbound on Highway 152 when he collided with the side of a large freight truck that was crossing onto Road 13. The California Highway Patrol is examining the incident, having been immediately notified following the collision. A spokesperson for the CHP conveyed condolences, stating, “The Chowchilla police department, the CHP, and the broader law enforcement community are deeply saddened. This was a heart-wrenching accident that highlights the risks officers face while serving their duty.”
On Saturday, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office temporarily assumed duties for the Chowchilla Police Department. The police chief remarked, “You rely on your officers to handle their assignments, and incidents like this are unforeseen events that no one desires.” Officer Barrantes originated from Dos Palos and embarked on his law enforcement career with the Mendota Police Department before relocating to West Sacramento. Subsequently, he accepted a position with the Chowchilla police force, deciding to establish his family in the area with three children. Additionally, he founded a t-shirt enterprise named On Point Apparel.
The chief emphasized that Barrantes was a diligent individual who cherished his community. “He built strong bonds with younger officers, guiding them through their development. His wisdom and experience will be profoundly missed,” the chief noted.
This occasion marks the initial fatality occurring during the line of duty for the Chowchilla Police Department. To further commemorate Officer Barrantes, Governor Newsom directed that all state flags remain at half-staff through the upcoming weekend.
