The Kern County Coroner’s office has officially identified the man killed in the recent hit-and-run collision on South H Street and Houghton Road. He was 26 years old.
Law enforcement details state the incident occurred on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at approximately 5:18 in the early morning hours. Responders were dispatched to that specific intersection regarding a multi-vehicle accident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, traffic flow at this intersection relies on standard stop signs for safety. Initial findings from the CHP investigation indicate a 33-year-old man was operating a 2011 Chevrolet Impala while driving westbound along Houghton Road, just east of South H Street. This vehicle stopped completely at the intersection.
Subsequently, the driver of the Impala attempted to turn south onto South H Street from the westbound Houghton Road approach. Simultaneously, an eastbound 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, piloted by an unidentified male, approached the intersection. The CHP reported that the Silverado’s driver disregarded the mandatory stop sign and continued past the intersection at an undetermined speed.
The vehicle collision report specifies that the front section of the Silverado impacted the right-hand side of the Impala.
The California Highway Patrol is actively seeking the driver of the suspect Chevrolet Silverado. This individual is charged with failing to stop at a sign, causing a collision, and subsequently fleeing the scene. The incident resulted in the death of one man and left two other people injured.
Photographic evidence from the scene, captured by an onlooker, was shared with authorities.
The 33-year-old driver of the Impala sustained only minor injuries from the collision. A 45-year-old passenger in the Impala suffered more serious injuries and received medical treatment at Kern Medical Hospital.
Tragically, Zacarias Ecahua Chipahua, who was seated in the front passenger seat on the right side of the Impala, was pronounced deceased at the location where the crash happened.
The driver of the Silverado, whose identity remains unknown, abandoned the scene and is currently considered a missing person case.
At this point, the CHP has not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in this incident.
