Fatal Columbus shooting death of Ta’Shawn Davis

Columbus, Ohio authorities confirmed the identity of an 18-year-old male who was killed during a police operation in the University District around early Sunday morning. The incident involved a Columbus police officer.

Sergeant James Fuqua detailed that patrol officers in the vicinity of North High Street and 9th Avenue were alerted about a recent robbery shortly before 3:30 a.m. They were searching for the suspect when two civilians approached them. These individuals reported that a man had pointed a weapon at them.

Fuqua stated that one officer received this description of the suspect. Not long after, that officer observed a person matching the provided description.

Police confirmed that the description given by the witnesses corresponded with the suspect in the reported robbery.

Fuqua explained that the officer immediately attempted to stop the individual, ordering them to raise their hands. However, they fled on foot, initiating a pursuit.

During the chase, the officer reported over their radio that the suspect was armed. Shortly thereafter, the officer discharged their firearm several times, resulting in the suspect being struck.

The suspect, identified as Ta’Shawn Davis, was taken to Grant Medical Center and unfortunately passed away later that morning.

Fuqua indicated that there was no evidence suggesting Davis was armed, although a weapon was discovered at the scene.

No officers sustained any injuries.

Due to Marsy’s Law, the involved officer’s identity is not being released. It is reported that this officer has been a member of the Columbus Police Department for 14 years.
