The fatal death of Major Isaac Epting

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office officially identified the man discovered deceased inside a vehicle consumed by flames as Major Isaac Epting. He was 85 years old and resided in Fultondale.

Fultondale firefighters were sent out in the evening on Tuesday to a call about a vegetation fire on Ellard Road. Upon beginning to put out the blaze, they saw a badly burned car and a corpse beside the vehicle.

Fultondale police Sergeant John Tanks explained that dispatchers got a notification about a collision from the deceased man’s iPhone at the same time that someone else reported the small fire. There were no people who saw the crash, according to Tanks, and investigators are uncertain if the driver was a victim of an unexpected medical event that caused him to leave the road and crash into a depression.

The car did not turn over, and it’s not yet known why the vehicle started to burn.

Tanks confirmed that there are no indications of intentional wrongdoing.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates mentioned that an autopsy was carried out on Wednesday, but the official cause of Major Isaac Epting’s death has still not been confirmed.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is currently in charge of the inquiry.
