The fatal accident involving his pickup truck happened on Tuesday afternoon around 1:14 p.m. on October 14, 2025. He was driving north on the I-15 freeway when his vehicle departed the road at a fast pace. It then overturned and landed upside down in a nearby creek bed, located just north of State Route 138.
Emergency services arrived quickly to find Sergio unresponsive and trapped inside his vehicle. Fire crews employed heavy rescue tools to gain access to the cabin. By 2:05 p.m., the coroner had been notified after medical personnel confirmed his death on the scene.
The crash transpired during the first significant rainstorm of the season, leading to hazardous, slippery road conditions in the High Desert and Cajon Pass regions. Prior to the event, local authorities from San Bernardino County Fire and Sheriff’s departments had issued driving advisories urging caution due to the weather. This resulted in multiple other traffic accidents being reported later that day, including several along the I-15 in areas like Hesperia and Victorville, as well as on Highway 138. Some of these incidents caused serious injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of this particular crash.
