Fire officials are currently investigating a fatal fire that occurred at a private residence in Harpswell on Tuesday morning. Responders from the State Fire Marshal’s office arrived at the property located on Harpswell Neck Road shortly after 4:28 a.m. following an initial dispatch to the scene by local Harpswell firefighters.
Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered one occupant inside the dwelling. The individual, who was identified as 78-year-old Hugh MacFarlane from Harpswell, was confirmed deceased at the location. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been notified and will conduct an examination to determine the precise cause and nature of the death.
The blaze resulted in significant structural damage to the house, with the second floor sustaining the most severe destruction. State investigators have not yet identified a specific cause for the fire and continue their examination of the incident.
