An airport official confirmed on Friday, October 17, that a plane had crashed at Avery County Airport. The incident occurred approximately at 11:45 a.m., as reported by the Avery County Fire Marshal.
Also known as Morrison Field, the airport is designated for general aviation and includes space for 27 privately owned hangars.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the crash resulted in a fatality. Troopers stated the aircraft involved was a small plane carrying just the pilot. The pilot identified as James Perry Webb, aged 75, resided in Bakersville, North Carolina. A county spokesperson noted Webb was an experienced pilot and owned a hangar at the airport.
Following the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were informed. Troopers indicated that further details would be provided by the FAA.
