The official cause of death has been determined for a man who was located in a wooded area that experienced a fire behind a local Lowe’s retail store in Milford. This information has been released following an examination.

Joseph Kane, identified as being 57 years old at the time of the incident, succumbed to his injuries after a fire occurred in a wooded area situated at the rear of the Lowe’s store located on Old Gate Lane during the month of August.

Investigators with the Chief Medical Examiner’s office confirmed on Wednesday that Kane’s death resulted from smoke inhalation and burns, with the death being officially classified as a homicide.

During the fire incident, a member of the fire department sustained a slight injury. It was reported that the flames did not spread to the adjacent Lowe’s building.

The origin of the fire remains unknown, and it is not yet confirmed if Kane resided at the encampment where the fire started.

Following the August fire, law enforcement indicated that a criminal investigation related to this event was currently active.
