Workers from the city of Roma were involved in a fatal accident near Eagle Pass on Friday. One person was killed and a second sustained injuries while being treated at a hospital. The deceased employee was identified as 31-year-old Samantha Serna. The city of Roma shared a message on their Facebook page expressing their sorrow. They stated, “Samantha was more than just a committed public official — she was a valued member of our City of Roma community, and her loss leaves a significant gap within our hearts… We request that everyone in our community extends their sympathies and prayers to this family during this incredibly difficult period.”

According to information from a local news source, the accident happened around 3 p.m. on U.S. Highway 277, east of Eagle Pass in Maverick County. An initial examination showed a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling west on U.S. Highway 277. The news report mentioned that the vehicle’s left rear tire burst, making it lose control and go off the road into a nearby ditch. The truck flipped over, throwing out three of the four people inside; they had not been wearing seatbelts at that time.

The truck hit a private fence and ended up upright, as stated in the news release. Serna was transported by helicopter to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and was later pronounced dead. The news release also indicated that the driver was buckled in securely at the time of the crash and needed to be freed from the vehicle. The driver was taken to Fort Duncan Medical Center in Eagle Pass. Two other passengers were airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio. Law enforcement has indicated the incident is still under investigation.
