Chronological Sequence of Events
In accordance with information released by the Temple Police Department, the sequence of occurrences during this incident unfolded as follows:
Following the pursuit of the suspect towards the railway tracks, at precisely 9:51 p.m., one officer issued a verbal warning, instructing the individual not to reach into their pocket. Approximately one minute later, another officer relayed intelligence to their partner, stating that the suspect was holding a knife.
In response to this development, the police officers drew their respective firearms and ordered the suspect to cease their actions immediately.
At 9:53 p.m., the suspect turned to face one of the officers and delivered a menacing threat: “I’m going to kill you. I promise you. Don’t come near me, I’m going to kill you.” The officer responded in an attempt to de-escalate the situation by stating, “I’m not here to kill you. I was simply trying to speak with you.”
The hostility escalated as the suspect continued to advance aggressively towards the officers, maintaining a threatening posture with a shiny object and persistently vocalizing threats against the personnel. When officers commanded the suspect to relinquish the object in their possession, they received the defiant response, “I’m not dropping anything.”
By 9:55 p.m., the suspect declared, “I’m not stopping. Shoot me, I’m not going to prison. Make those lights stop blinding me. Fire your weapon. I want you to know now, I will make you drop it. I swear I will kill you.”
An officer attempted to reason with the suspect, pleading, “Please stop, man. Just put the object down. Calm down. Can you just stop?”
The suspect reiterated his refusal, stating, “I’m not stopping. Move out of my way,” and continued his advance directly towards one of the officers. Consequently, both officers discharged their weapons.
Immediate medical intervention was initiated by the officers until emergency services personnel arrived on the scene. The injured individual was transported to a medical facility, where he was later pronounced deceased at 10:40 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey. The police department elected not to disclose the individual’s identity to the public.
Subsequent examination of the item the suspect was initially believed to be holding confirmed it was actually two mechanical pencils, completely unrelated to a knife.
