The Kankakee County Coroner announced Thursday that four people died in a head-on collision on West Road in western Kankakee County on Thursday.
According to Coroner Bob Gessner, the individuals inside the 2021 Honda Accord were its driver, Malik Parker, aged 26 from Plainfield, and passenger Malia Park, a juvenile from Champaign. Gessner did not disclose the girl’s age.
The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office later revealed in a Friday press release that the juvenile was five years old.
The occupants of the Chevrolet Equinox were 51-year-old Rafig Muhammad from Harvey, driving the vehicle, and 66-year-old Fuayatullah Khan from Aurora.
All four individuals were pronounced dead at the accident scene by Gessner.
The crash happened around 10:20 p.m. Thursday on South 18000 West Road, close to West 2000 South Road, approximately two miles east and south of Reddick in western Kankakee County.
Sheriff’s reports indicate witnesses stated the Honda Accord traveling north on 18000 West Road was speeding and crossing into oncoming traffic shortly before the crash, passing other cars just before colliding.
The Honda then collided head-on with a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox moving south, as stated in the release.
Following the impact, the Accord caught fire. One person from the Honda was thrown from the vehicle, while the other was trapped inside, said Gessner.
Gessner added that rescue personnel had to remove the occupants of the Equinox from the vehicle.
The Illinois State Police Traffic Reconstruction Unit is aiding in the ongoing investigation.
