Fatal rural DeKalb County car crash death of Edward Smith
A man from Somonauk has tragically passed away following a severe medical episode and subsequent collision on a country road in DeKalb County, law enforcement reported.
The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Edward Smith, who was 81 years old, is the individual involved in this incident.
According to reports from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Smith was driving an SUV south on Somonauk Road, approximately one-quarter mile before the Chicago Road junction, when he suddenly encountered a “serious health issue.”
As a direct outcome of this medical crisis, his vehicle lost control and rear-ended a black 2012 Dodge Ram that was being driven by a 69-year-old resident of Plano, who was also headed south along the same route.
Further details indicate that the SUV then veered off the road and overturned. When the responding deputies arrived at the accident scene, they provided prompt medical assistance to Smith.
Paramedic services from the Somonauk Fire Protection District were dispatched and transported Smith to Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital in Sandwich. Tragically, medical officials at the hospital confirmed that Mr. Smith did not survive his injuries.
The operator of the pickup truck involved in the collision sustained no injuries.
