Fatal Berkeley County fire death of Leroy Johnson Jr. and Susan Umphlett Landes
County authorities announced the identities of the two individuals who lost their lives in separate fire incidents within Berkeley County. The county coroner confirmed the details on Wednesday.
The first fatality occurred on Sunday morning around 5:38 a.m. at a residence located on Merrell Avenue in Bonneau, South Carolina. Leroy Johnson Jr., who was 83 years old, passed away outside a burning recreational vehicle on the property.
Susan Umphlett Landes, aged 68, died earlier on Wednesday at 7:31 a.m. Her death was linked to a structure fire that took place on Assembly Lane in Moncks Corner. Her hometown was Moncks Corner.
Coroner Darnell Hartwell notified the public about these tragic deaths. He stated that formal autopsies were being requested to determine the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Both incidents are currently being examined by multiple agencies. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is involved, along with the South Carolina Fire Marshal’s office. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is also part of the investigation teams.
