Fatal McAllen, Texas shooting death of Eddy Betancourt – Obituary

Eddy Betancourt, a 61-year-old man from Mission, was found shot to death at a business in western McAllen, prompting an ongoing homicide investigation by local authorities.

According to the McAllen Police Department, officers discovered Betancourt’s body on Saturday, December 27, at a business located in the 800 block of North Ware Road. Investigators confirmed that he had suffered fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later identified a suspect in the case as 60-year-old Reynaldo Mata-Rios of Pharr. Authorities said a warrant for Mata-Rios’ arrest was issued at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 28, charging him with first-degree felony murder. Officials stated the warrant was temporarily withheld from public release in hopes that the suspect would voluntarily turn himself in.

In a news release, police indicated that Mata-Rios had expressed an intention to surrender but had not done so as of the latest update. Law enforcement continues efforts to locate the suspect.

Betancourt was known in the community for his public service, having served as a commissioner with the Texas Facilities Commission. The investigation into his death remains active as authorities work to bring the suspect into custody.
