Fatal Macomb County, Michigan crash death of El Verson Mitchell – Obituary
El Verson Mitchell, 27, of Ann Arbor, was killed in a crash in Clinton Township, Michigan, on Monday, Dec. 29, after his vehicle was struck by a driver allegedly under the influence.
Authorities say Torrance Irby, 26, of Detroit, was driving west on Metropolitan Parkway near Groesbeck Highway when he collided with Mitchell’s car, pushing it into the back of a van. Mitchell was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Irby reportedly fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended.
Irby was arraigned on Friday, Jan. 2, in 41B District Court on two felony charges: operating while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, a 5-year felony. His bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido called the incident “an entirely preventable act” that tragically claimed the life of a young man and emphasized the dangers of impaired driving. Irby is scheduled to appear in court again at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, for a probable cause conference.
