Neil Wahpistikwan, a resident of Big Island Lake Cree Nation, was killed in a shooting on Tuesday morning, his father confirmed.

Larry Wahpistikwan said his family is struggling to cope with the tragedy and the shock of losing his son. RCMP reported that the incident, which occurred about 320 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon, left one person dead and three others injured. Authorities have not released the identities of the other victims.

“I was shocked when I heard the news,” Larry Wahpistikwan told CBC, recalling how he arrived at the scene to find officers performing CPR on Neil. “I had to be strong, but I couldn’t hold myself together.”

He added that messages of support from family and friends have been pouring in. “My family, they’re hurt right now, just like what I’m hurting,” he said, expressing the deep grief affecting those close to Neil.
