Joseph Holt III, 65, of Upper Marlboro, was killed in a random shooting Sunday morning in the Kettering area of Prince George’s County, authorities confirmed. A person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, and a firearm recovered from the suspect has been linked to Holt’s death.
According to police, officers responded around 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 4, 2026, to a report of an unresponsive man at Watkins Park Plaza. Holt was found inside his vehicle with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives have assumed control of the investigation.
Later that evening, around 8:10 p.m., law enforcement received reports of a separate shooting in the 12000 block of Darlenen Street. Officers discovered a man shot inside his vehicle, and nearby on Cambleton Drive, they found a woman also injured by gunfire. A third person was reportedly fired upon in a car but was unharmed.
Police canvassed the area and apprehended a suspect on Cambleton Drive within minutes. Investigators confirmed the firearm in the suspect’s possession was connected to Holt’s fatal shooting earlier that day.
The male victim from the evening shootings is in stable condition, while the female victim is listed as critical but stable. Authorities believe the attacks, including Holt’s, were random. The investigation remains ongoing.
