Riverdale, Illinois Man Barry Lewis Arrested in Riverdale for Fatal Hit-and-Run

RIVERDALE, IL — Barry Lewis, a resident of Riverdale whose age was not released, was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred on New Year’s Eve at a gas station parking lot.

According to the Riverdale Police Department, Lewis was taken into custody following an investigation into a crash reported around 4:42 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the 100 block of East 146th Street. Authorities say a white Kia struck 72-year-old Harriet Reynolds as she was walking through the gas station parking lot.

Police said Reynolds was knocked to the ground by the impact and subsequently run over by the vehicle. She later died from her injuries. Investigators allege Lewis exited the vehicle and moved Reynolds from beneath it, then initially remained at the scene and provided a false statement to officers, claiming he was not involved, before leaving the area.

Through video evidence and witness interviews, detectives determined Lewis was the driver involved in the crash. After unsuccessful attempts to contact him, police said detectives reached out to his attorney, who later presented Lewis to authorities. Lewis allegedly refused to cooperate with the investigation.

Lewis was transported to custody and charged with obstruction of justice, driving while license was revoked, and causing death. The vehicle involved is being processed and searched for additional evidence. Lewis is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing Wednesday at the Markham Courthouse.
