Fatal Minneapolis shooting death of Renee Nicole Good – Obituary

Renee Nicole Good, 37, was identified by local authorities and media outlets as the woman who was shot and killed Wednesday during an encounter involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis.

The shooting happened near the intersection of 34th Street and Portland Avenue amid a tense scene where federal agents were positioned in the area and drivers attempted to move around ICE vehicles. During the confrontation, an agent discharged a firearm into an SUV, according to video footage later reviewed by news organizations.

Members of the Minneapolis City Council released a joint statement describing Good as a city resident who was spending her morning helping people in her community when she was killed. They placed responsibility for her death on federal authorities.

Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was known for her kindness and deep compassion toward others. She described Renee as someone who devoted her life to caring for people and said she was loving, forgiving, and affectionate.

Ganger said she learned of the shooting late Wednesday morning and confirmed that her daughter lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. She emphasized that Renee was not involved in any protest activity or confrontations related to ICE operations.

According to a family member of Good’s former husband, who passed away in 2023, the couple shared a young son who is now about four or five years old.

State Rep. Leigh Finke of St. Paul also issued a statement mourning Good, remembering her as a queer woman and a valued member of the community whose life was taken from her family.

The fatal incident has intensified ongoing disputes between Minneapolis officials and federal authorities over ICE’s recent enforcement actions in the Twin Cities. While a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security claimed the woman used her vehicle in a violent manner toward agents, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly rejected that characterization, saying the video showed an agent acting recklessly.

Earlier in the day, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that Good was not the subject of any enforcement action at the time of the shooting.
