Philip Williams, a 63-year-old resident of Yazoo City, has been identified as the driver who lost his life in a serious collision involving a school bus in rural Yazoo County.
The crash occurred Thursday afternoon around 3:18 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 433 in the Bentonia area, according to the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said Williams was driving a dark-colored GMC Canyon northbound on Highway 49 when it collided with a school bus traveling west through the intersection.
Authorities reported that the force of the impact caused the pickup truck to overturn several times. Williams suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the collision, two students were riding on the school bus. Officials confirmed that neither the children nor the bus driver was hurt.
The Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office stated that the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing and expressed condolences to Williams’ family and loved ones.
