Fatal Cranston pedestrian crash death of Vaune Vacarro of Rhode Island – Obituary
Cranston police have confirmed that Vaune Vacarro, 56, lost her life after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning in the city. The Rhode Island Office of the State Medical Examiner identified Vacarro as the woman killed while standing in the breakdown lane along Scituate Avenue.
Authorities said officers rushed to the scene after reports of a person down and discovered Vacarro suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries. Despite immediate emergency efforts by first responders, she was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived.
Investigators later arrested 30-year-old Richard D’Amico in connection with the incident. He is accused of leaving the scene without stopping or notifying authorities. Police stated there is no evidence that D’Amico contacted 911 or reported the crash following the collision.
Family members told officers they had not been in contact with Vacarro for several years and described her as transient. According to relatives, she had previously lived in multiple states, including Florida, California, Colorado, New York, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Police confirmed that no missing persons report had been filed for her prior to the crash.
An Amazon employee traveling through the area discovered Vacarro and alerted police at approximately 4:15 a.m., prompting the emergency response.
Detectives continue to investigate why Vacarro was on Scituate Avenue at the time of the crash. Officers are canvassing nearby homeless encampments and working to piece together her movements leading up to the incident.
Police noted that Vacarro was wearing a black jacket layered over a black hoodie, black jeans, and pink shoes when she was struck.
