Fatal Maui officer-involved shooting death of Kristopher Austin – Obituary

Kristopher Austin, 40, was killed during an officer-involved shooting on Maui on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Austin was confronted by Maui Police after a report of a terroristic threat involving an armed man in an open field off Maui Lani Parkway just before 7:30 p.m.

Police said he refused to follow commands and fired at officers, who returned fire.

Austin was pronounced dead at the scene. His partner, with whom he had shared nine years together, described him as a talented individual facing personal struggles.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
