Fatal Indianapolis car crash death of Dechon Sims – Obituary

A father tragically died, and his two children were rescued after their car was found submerged in a retention pond early Tuesday morning on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Fire Department, along with the Lawrence Fire Department, responded to the scene near 4000 Pendleton Way around midnight after receiving reports of a vehicle fully submerged in the water.

When emergency responders arrived, several officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and Lawrence Police Department had already managed to pull the man, identified as 28-year-old Dechon Sims, and his two children, aged 8 and 9, from the vehicle. Despite their heroic efforts, Sims was later pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital, while both children were transported to Riley Hospital for Children, where they were listed in stable condition.

The vehicle was located about 15 feet from the shore and 10 feet deep in the water. The officers who entered the frigid waters to save the family were evaluated for cold exposure; three were taken to the hospital but were in good condition, while the fourth officer was released at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by local authorities.
