Fatal Alamance County standoff death of Thomas Mark Sharpe Jr. – Obituary

Authorities in Alamance County reported the death of Thomas Mark Sharpe Jr. following a standoff with police on Tuesday afternoon. Officers from multiple departments located Sharpe at Springwood Park in Burlington shortly after 2:30 p.m. Sharpe was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, with no further danger to the public.

Sharpe had been wanted by Stokes County authorities in connection to a shooting that occurred on Monday morning. The shooting, which took place at a home on Poplar Spring Road, left one individual wounded. The victim managed to escape and was assisted by a family member in reaching an ambulance. However, updates on the victim’s condition have not yet been released.

The Burlington Police Department received a tip that Sharpe’s vehicle had been seen near Springwood Park, prompting a response from local law enforcement. Officers from Burlington, Gibsonville, and Elon police departments mobilized, and using a drone, they located Sharpe in a mostly vacant section of the park. Sharpe attempted to flee in his vehicle but was stopped after officers disabled it. Negotiations for his surrender ensued, but during the standoff, Sharpe fatally shot himself.

The investigation continues, and Springwood Park will remain closed until authorities complete their assessment of the scene. Local residents were advised of the heightened law enforcement presence, and school systems in both Stokes and Rockingham counties were alerted during the search.
