Fatal Saanich, B.C. homicide death of Laura Gover – Obituary

Laura Gover, a 41-year-old business professor at Vancouver Island University and Camosun College, was identified by a longtime friend after her death on January 5 in Saanich, British Columbia.

Known for her dedication as a mother to two young daughters, Gover is being remembered by friends and family for her warmth and commitment to her students.

Kelsea McLaughlin, who had been close to Gover for 25 years, established a fundraiser to support the children, ages seven and 11, raising nearly $110,000 to be placed in a trust for their future. McLaughlin described the loss as both heartbreaking and senseless, emphasizing Gover’s role as an extraordinary friend, mother, and teacher.

Saanich police reported that Muhammed Basar, identified as Gover’s ex-husband, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death. Officers responded to a call at the 1600 block of Blair Avenue on January 5 and arrested Basar the same day.

His next court appearance is scheduled for January 21. The case has been classified as a “K file,” a designation for alleged intimate partner violence in British Columbia’s provincial court system.
