Fatal Alamogordo, New Mexico police shooting death of Anthony Zane Blalock – Obituary
Anthony Zane Blalock, 41, was shot and killed during a police encounter late Tuesday night in Alamogordo. Anthony Zane Blalock died at the scene after officers responded to a reported disturbance at a residential property.
According to authorities, Alamogordo police were dispatched following a 911 call reporting a possible burglary near Virginia Avenue. Officers were told by a resident that an individual was in the backyard and was armed with a knife.
Police said that as officers moved toward the area, Blalock emerged while holding a knife and failed to comply with repeated commands to drop the weapon. Investigators stated that Blalock continued advancing toward the officers.
Both officers discharged their firearms, striking Blalock. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the encounter.
Investigators later reported that there was no evidence of a burglary and no additional suspects involved. Police also noted that Blalock had injuries to his face and wrist that appeared to be self-inflicted.
The New Mexico State Police have taken over the investigation, and the findings will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office to determine whether the officers’ actions were legally justified.
