Fatal Memphis, Tennessee shooting death of Rodriguez Poplar – Obituary

Rodriguez Poplar was shot and killed early Friday morning after he and his wife pulled into a stranger’s driveway in Memphis. Rodriguez Poplar died at the scene as his wife looked on during the violent encounter.

According to his widow, Shelia Booker, the couple was driving along North Trezevant Street when they noticed police lights ahead. Booker said her husband turned into a nearby driveway to avoid police attention because one of their headlights was broken and the vehicle’s tags were expired.

Booker said the homeowner soon came outside armed with a gun and demanded they leave the property. She told investigators the man pointed the weapon at her, prompting Poplar to step out of the car in an effort to protect her.

That is when the homeowner allegedly fired, striking Poplar in front of his wife. Booker said the shooting happened within moments and left her fearing for her own life.

Police officers, who had been nearby at the time, arrived at the scene in less than a minute and made an arrest, according to Booker. She credited officers with saving her life.

Booker later spoke publicly about the incident, saying investigators have kept her informed about upcoming court dates related to the suspect in her husband’s killing.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
